Presidents 'Address

By Anthony M. Clark OSGWA President, Cherokee County Game Warden

Dear friends and members... It's time once again for another exciting issue of our magazine, in this address I'll try to update you as to the hard work your board of director's have been doing to keep the association going strong. First, the OSGWA opposed house bill 1860 the night hog hunting bill, as it was originally written. The original version, once the word got out would have basically shut us down from working night hunters, all a spot lighter would have to say is "I'm hog hunting" and there wouldn't have been much we could do, not to mention the safety issues no firearms restrictions and who's to say what is actually a crop. The board instructed me to send a letter to the members of the senate wildlife committee outlying our concerns, the letter is available to any member who wants to see it just send a request tobmay@intellex.com and we can see that you get a copy. We have voiced our concern, now we'll just have to wait and see the outcome although,an article in the daily Oklahoman reported that the senate had amended the bill to require the game warden in the county to issue a permit to hunt ferrel hogs at night, which would be a success on our part.

The next bit of really exciting news is the board approved hiring an attorney to serve as general council for the OSGWA, and we were extremely lucky to be able to hire Gary James. Gary is a prominent Oklahoma City attorney with outstanding credentials and vast array of experience especially in dealing with state government. Gary is also the attorney for the Oklahoma State Troopers Association and the Oklahoma Able Agents Association. Gary is officially on board and has been reviewing our policies and procedures and the state constitution as it applies to us. We welcome Gary aboard and hope he'll be at the summer meeting to get a chance to meet everyone. If you have any questions about Gary or his function with the OSGWA contact your director, or feel free to contact me at home and we'll try to answer any questions that you may have.

It's time once again to start thinking about the summer meeting and banquet, it will be held at the same place as last year, the Weston Hotel in down town Okla. City, near brick town and should prove to be bigger and better than ever so please plan to attend. As you all know it will be the weekend that is designated as 'FREE FISHING WEEKEND' so make plans now, there will be more information forthcoming. It's a beautiful time of the year and I hope everyone has a chance to get out and enjoy it, remember to wear your life jacket in the boat and always wear your body armor, STAY SAFE. See you all at the summer meeting.
